Gezhouba becomes GMS Namibia

Gezhouba Mining Services has changed its name to GMS Namibia Mining Services.The rebranding ceremony was held on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, at the annual Chamber of Mines of Namibia Expo and Conference at the Windhoek Showgrounds in the capital.The mining contractor chief executive officer Wen Shu said that "the seed we planted in Namibia five years ago has now taken root, flourished, and grown into a strong and vibrant enterprise."At the same occasion, mines minister Modestus Amutse said that for any company to succeed in Namibia's economic cornerstone, the mining sector, "it must do more than extract value from our ground; it must invest in our people, our communities and our future. This is what I understand GMS has set out to do since 2021, when the company began operations at one of the world's largest uranium mines."Apart from providing mining services to Swakop Uranium's massive Husab open-pit mine, the Chinese company also provides mining and related auxiliary services, including the construction of the new Twin Hills gold mine outside Karibib.According to Wie Jinming, economic counsellor at the Chinese embassy in Windhoek, a large number of Chinese companies, including GMS, have put down roots in Namibia, "not only bringing capital, technology and management expertise, but also creating substantial local employment and cultivating a large pool of local technical and management talent, while actively fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities."According to him, over the past five years in Namibia, GMS has achieved a NOSA five-star safety rating in workplace safety and environmental protection, has actively invested locally and promoted employment, with cumulative local procurement reaching N$1.2 billion. The company has created nearly 1,000 jobs, while more than 90% of its employees are Namibian nationals. GMS has also trained more than 80 local university students and apprentices, "many of whom have grown into key technical staff and core management backbone through the company's ongoing training and localisation efforts. This year, GMS was also awarded the highest-level A+ Affirmative Action Compliance Certificate by the Employment Equity Commission of Namibia, and has not had a single negative public incident since its establishment," he said.Wen Shu said that "by incorporating 'Namibia' into our company name, we reaffirm our long-term commitment to this country."The economic counsellor said that the China-Namibia Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership has continued to reach new heights over the years and that, on 10 July, when Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah during her state visit to China, "the two sides agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a China-Namibia Community with a shared future for the new era, injecting new and powerful momentum into the development of China-Namibia relations."Wie Jinming insists that "an enterprise's growth cannot be separated from the development of its host country; only by closely aligning its own future with Namibia's development can it move forward steadily and go far.""Today's theme, 'In Namibia, For Namibia,' reflects a commitment that goes beyond words. It is a statement of intent that GMS sees its future as bound to Namibia's future, and that its growth is meant to be shared with the communities in which it operates. Government will continue to welcome and support investors and partners who bring this spirit of genuine partnership, who localise, who train, who prioritise safety, and who see Namibia not simply as a place to do business, but as a place to build alongside our people," Amutse said.
