The Capricorn Foundation officially launched phase two of its Food Waste Challenge (FWC) in April 2023, calling on innovative solutions that can create or expand self-sufficient social enterprises to address the issue of food waste in Namibia and create employment for Namibians.

The FWC, titled “How can we use Social Entrepreneurship to radically reduce Food Waste while also creating employment opportunities?” is based on an open innovation platform, offering a cash prize of N$100 000 from the Capricorn Foundation plus a branding refresh and a marketing package from Synergi Marketing PTY Ltd worth N$50 000. Other project partners include Business Box Windhoek and the Gondwana Care Trust.

Proposals are evaluated on pre-defined criteria over two rounds through expert panels and must meet specific requirements with justifications in the form of arguments and references. Aspiring Social Entrepreneurs for Social Enterprises must provide original and impactful solutions for any part of the total Food Waste lifecycle from collecting food waste at the source of the waste, verifying that the food is still suitable for human consumption, distributing edible food to vulnerable persons who can benefit from it, or any combination of these elements.

Who can enter?

1. Individual participant - an individual aged sixteen (16) years or older at the time of registration.

2. Team Participants - teams consisting of up to eight (8) individuals aged sixteen (16) years or older at the time of registration.

3. Business Entity Participants - legal business entities.

How do you enter and submit your idea?

To enter the Competition, visit https://www.capricornfoodwastechallenge.skild.com (the “Site”). The closing date for entries is 22 May 2023 at 16h00. Accurately and truthfully complete the online registration form, accept the Terms and Conditions, and follow the instructions for submitting an “Entry” as described on the Site. Existing businesses that enter proposals to grow the business will be required to provide proof of operation of the existing business and evidence of the impact the business has made thus far.

What kind of ideas and solutions are we looking for?

The Capricorn Foundation is looking for an original proposal for starting up a Social Enterprise or for growing or scaling an existing Social Enterprise that designs or advances products, services, processes, systems, or programmes aimed at reducing Food Waste in Namibia in a self-sustaining manner (i.e., not be dependent on grants or donations only), while also providing employment opportunities. Participants may submit an Entry individually, as part of a team, or as a Business Entity.

How will ideas be judged?

All entries that meet the eligibility criteria for the challenge and do not otherwise violate any terms and conditions will be evaluated on the following criteria in Round 1:

1. Relevance- Does the proposal address the stated challenge, namely: lead to the reduction of food waste, create employment opportunities and be self-sustaining?

2. Creativity- A demonstration that the proposed solution displays a unique approach.

3. Feasibility- A demonstration that the venture can be successfully implemented.

4. Planning - A clear and well-defined strategy to achieve objectives and goals.

5. Self-sustaining - The ability of the business to maintain itself.

6. Social Impact - The value the new venture will bring society.

7. Inspiring - Will the solution inspire people to address the issues of Food Waste and Unemployment in Namibia? This criterion will be used in case of any ties among the entries.

The evaluation and scoring of proposals in Round 2 will be the same as in Round 1, and the effectiveness and presentation (Pitch) to the judging panel will also be evaluated.
