Building Namibia’s cross-border towing empire
13 years of towing, triumphs, and turning passion into a powerhouse
When most of us think of tow trucks, we imagine flashing lights, roadside rescues, and car breakdowns. But for Ryan van den Heever towing is more than just a job, it's a full-blown passion project that has grown into a powerhouse.
In tonight’s episode of My.na Cars, airing on NTV at 21:00, presenter Diana Master sits down with Ryan van den Heever to uncover the story behind Midway Recovery & Transport (MRT), a homegrown towing and transport business that now operates across the SADC region.
“It wasn’t easy,” Ryan admits. “But it was passion that drove me. I started MRT from scratch when I was the youngest towing business owner in the country.”
From humble beginnings to managing a fleet of flatbeds and boom slings, Ryan shares how MRT now handles everything from roadside breakdowns to long-distance vehicle transport. His team’s services range from accident recovery and fuel deliveries to jump starts, flat tyre assistance, and key retrievals.
And it’s not just about the local market. MRT truly means it when they say they "cover everywhere."
“You could be on holiday in Zimbabwe or Zambia, and if your car breaks down, we’ll dispatch a team and bring it back to Windhoek,” Ryan says.
With evolving vehicle technology, Ryan explains how MRT is adapting. His team receives training from dealerships on handling modern vehicles, including EVs and luxury imports, ensuring damage-free and expert towing.
Despite downsizing slightly after Covid-19, Ryan’s passion hasn’t faded. His daily grind begins just after 08:00, and it doesn’t stop. From dispatching drivers to fielding emergency calls, every day is unique. “Every day is a challenge,” he says. “No two days are the same.”
