Andrada Mining reaches 3 000 Namibians through social investments

Andrada Mining has helped almost 3,000 people in Namibia through its social investment programmes, which span education, sports, healthcare, and infrastructure development.The company applies Namibia’s mining sector social multiplier of ×7 to calculate the broader impact of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.A corporate social investment committee oversees these efforts to ensure structured delivery and measurable outcomes.The miner, which operates the Uis Tin Mine in the Erongo Region, has intensified its community engagement by increasing local procurement to £21 million (approximately N$499 million) in the past year - much of it directed at Namibian-owned businesses.This approach supports not only jobs but also entrepreneurship and local economic diversification.Nearly 100% of Andrada’s workforce is Namibian, including 128 direct employees and 187 contractors.The company’s investments in people and services form part of a broader environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy that also aims to improve sustainability performance.On the environmental front, Andrada recorded a 5% reduction in water use (0.21 cubic metres per tonne of ore) and a 7% decrease in energy consumption.It achieved zero fatalities and a 16% drop in its total recordable injury frequency rate, marking notable safety improvements across its operations.The company is aligning its ESG reporting and performance with international standards, including the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the principles of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).Governance has also been strengthened with the establishment of a board-level ESG committee, and work is underway to integrate biodiversity action plans and climate scenario modelling into operations.Andrada’s ESG-driven approach places it among the more socially conscious players in Namibia’s growing critical minerals sector, contributing not only to national development goals but also to its long-term licence to operate. - wonder@nmh-hub.com.na
