Kobus shines in wet-weather debut at Red Star Raceway
Namibian motorsport prospect Kobus delivered an impressive performance on his wet-weather debut at Red Star Raceway near Delmas, South Africa, competing in the Toyota Gazoo Racing GR86 series.
The 16-year-old, who has had little to no experience racing in wet conditions due to Namibia’s dry climate, adapted quickly to the challenging track. Following overnight rain, Kobus qualified an outstanding second place on a cold and slippery circuit, immediately signalling his intent against a competitive field.
He carried that momentum into race day, securing second-place finishes in both Race 1 and Race 2. His performances were made even more notable by the calibre of competition, which included a professional Mercedes-AMG driving instructor and a multiple South African karting champion currently racing with factory Toyota backing.
With overtaking proving difficult on the tight and technical Red Star layout, Kobus demonstrated maturity beyond his years. He maintained consistent pressure on the race leaders while avoiding unnecessary risks, showcasing disciplined racecraft and composure in tricky conditions.
The results see the young Namibian return home still leading the championship standings, underlining his growing reputation as one of the region’s most promising drivers.
Kobus and his team also praised the organisation of the event, thanking Leeroy and the Toyota Gazoo Racing crew for delivering a well-run race weekend, with cars prepared to a high standard. Appreciation was also extended to fellow drivers and their families for the strong sense of sportsmanship that contributed to a positive and respectful racing environment.
Attention now turns to the next round of the series at Zwartkops Raceway on 22 May, where Kobus will look to defend his championship lead against rivals competing on familiar home ground.
