Nearly N$30m for GBV programmes

Gender equality, poverty eradication and social welfare minister Doreen Sioka has announced an allocation of about N$29.8 million towards projects to combat gender-based violence (GBV) for the 2024/2025 financial year.The ministry&#039;s total budget for this financial year is N$7.9 billion.Over the last few months, Namibia has seen a rise in domestic violence cases, most of which lead to the death of the victim. In several cases, victims were reported to have opened cases against their perpetrators, but could not escape their fate.Sioka told Namibian Sun that the budget to fight GBV is the same every year, and the ministry hopes to see support from the various structures under it in the fight against violence.Awareness campaigns"This year, we hope to intensify the awareness campaigns by strengthening our coordination mechanisms, meaning that our presence in the regions also needs to be intensified. This coordination starts from the constituency level and there needs to be meetings at a regional level and then only those issues can be brought to a national level,” she said.“The ministry does not see everything and is only alerted when the media points it out, then we can condemn the actions. Everyone needs to help fight this, not just the ministry,” Sioka added.During her budget motivation, she further announced that N$12.75 million has been allocated to expenditure in the offices of the minister and her three deputy ministers.Additionally, N$12 million will go towards the ministry&#039;s development budget, which will cover the construction of a community empowerment centre in Keetmanshoop, the renovation of Farm Kaukurus in the Omaheke Region and homes of safety and shelter as well as renovation and maintenance of the Namibia Children&#039;s Home in the Khomas Region.
