Home Affairs launch online visa application system
The home affairs ministry launched its online tourist visa applications last week, saying the development comes at a time when Namibia has recorded more than 141 000 undocumented or stateless people.
Home affairs minister Albert Kawana said although the number is not validated, it "indicates the extent of the problem of statelessness in Namibia.
"This registration exercise was undertaken by the ministry as tasked, through the social progression pillar of the Second Harambee Prosperity Plan, to regularise the status of stateless and undocumented persons in Namibia,” the minister said.
"The regularisation will be achieved through enacting relevant legislation. In line with the principle aim of the social progression pillar, which is to improve the quality of life of individuals, the ministry is busy drafting bills aimed at preventing statelessness and regularising the status of specified categories of stateless and undocumented persons."
Reduce
This year, Namibia commemorated 'ID Day' under the theme "Ending statelessness for social progression".
"We acknowledge that Namibia, like many other countries in the world, is faced with the challenge of statelessness and undocumented persons. Equally, we recognise that we must reduce statelessness in our country by ensuring that those affected exercise their right to identity, travel documents, and administrative assistance," Kawana said.
Kawana emphasised that the ministry has established offices in all 14 regions.
