Maths training hits Okahandja

A stronger mathematics foundation is opening doors for Namibian learners, and Bank Windhoek is helping teachers lead the change. In partnership with the ministry of education, the Bank has hosted a comprehensive mathematics teacher training initiative since 2024 to strengthen numeracy and build practical financial literacy in classrooms across the country.The second 2026 session, recently held outside Okahandja, brought together the Ministry, the Africa Leadership Institute, and 40 mathematics teachers from the Hardap, Omaheke, Khomas, Erongo, and ǁKaras regions.“Our investment of N$1.2 million so far is an investment in Namibia’s future,” said Bank Windhoek executive officer of marketing and corporate communication services, Jacquiline Pack. “Mathematics builds the problem-solving skills that underpin financial literacy and economic resilience. When we equip teachers with stronger methods and real-life examples, we help learners make confident decisions, in school and later in life.”To date, the initiative has equipped 240 mathematics teachers with refreshed teaching approaches and tools to connect numeracy to everyday money choices, such as budgeting, saving, interest, and responsible borrowing. The aim is a clear multiplier effect: better-supported educators, more engaged learners, and stronger outcomes for communities as young people progress into further study, entrepreneurship, and the workplace.The curriculum makes mathematics more accessible and relevant by linking classroom concepts to real-world scenarios. This practical focus helps teachers build learner confidence, strengthen conceptual understanding, and show why maths matters beyond examinations.The programme reflects Bank Windhoek’s commitment to home-grown impact and Namibia’s development priorities. Stronger numeracy supports a more capable workforce for a data-driven economy. It expands opportunity for learners who aspire to careers in finance, engineering, health sciences, and technology.
