Windhoek stadium, streets renamed to honour national figures
The City of Windhoek has announced the renaming of several streets and a public facility as part of ongoing efforts to recognise Namibians who have made notable contributions to the country’s heritage and development.
According to a public notice issued yesterday, the name changes will take effect from Friday, 24 October 2025, following resolutions passed by the City Council.
Among the new names, Rolls Royce Street in Khomasdal will be renamed Reverend Frederick Joseph Street, while Isabella Street becomes Immanuel Karuhumba Street in Auasblick.
Sydney Atkinson Street in Olympia will now bear the name Aaron Shihepo Street, and Sheffield Street/Link in Windhoek North will be renamed Simataa Khama Street.
In Katutura, Barug Street has been renamed Dr Fleming Aspara Street, and the Khomasdal Stadium will now be known as Bobby Sissing Stadium.
The City said these changes are part of its broader programme to celebrate and preserve the legacy of “distinguished Namibians who have contributed significantly to the nation’s social, cultural, and developmental heritage”.
Residents, businesses, and service providers have been urged to update their records, correspondence, and signage accordingly. The physical replacement of street signs will be carried out in due course.
“The City extends appreciation to all families and residents for their cooperation as we collectively honour our shared heritage and identity,” the statement concluded.
