Windhoek buses switch to cashless system

Windhoek buses go cash-free. Passengers must swap old smartcards for new ones, free until 4 October, to continue travelling smoothly.

The Windhoek municipality officially launched a cashless bus ticketing system earlier this week, replacing cash payments and old smartcards in a bid to improve passenger convenience, operational efficiency and safety.

From now on, only the new bus smartcards will be accepted and cash or old cards will no longer be valid for travel.

The City announced that passengers should exchange their current cards at the Municipal Bus Depot in Patterson Street, Southern Industrial Area – they have until 15 August, this Friday, to do so.

Any remaining balance on old cards will be verified and transferred to the new smartcard during this process.

A valid ID, birth certificate for school learners or a passport for foreign nationals is required.

New smartcards will be provided free of charge between 4 August and 4 October to all passengers, whether they are replacing an old card or registering for the first time.

Top-up and contact

A first-time top-up of N$50 is mandatory. Replacement cards after loss or damage will cost N$78, with top-ups ranging from N$50 to N$2 500.

Passengers can register and load their new cards at municipal offices across the city, including the central business district, Katutura, Ombili, Wanaheda and Okuryangava. Each card will be linked to the passenger’s personal details to ensure secure recovery or transfer of balances if lost, damaged or faulty.

The municipality has urged commuters to complete the card exchange process early to avoid travel disruptions.

For further information, passengers can contact the municipality’s public transport office at 061 290 2507/3524/3520/2436 or the call centre at 061 290 3777.
