Warmbad: A forgotten town

More than two centuries after its establishment as a mission station, Warmbad in the ǁKaras region has seen its commercial prominence fade, leaving behind deteriorating historical buildings and a community hoping for renewed development.A visit by Namibian Sun to the small southern town on Thursday revealed ageing structures that reflect the settlement's past, when it served as an important stopover for traders and travellers moving through southern Namibia.For Yvonne Jacobs, community and cultural partnerships officer at the Orange River-Karoo Conservation Area (ORKCA), the decline is personal. Born and raised in Warmbad, she remembers a settlement that once offered residents access to businesses and essential services.“When I was growing up in Warmbad, we had service stations and shops, including a supermarket. But over the years, things started to deteriorate,” Jacobs told Namibian Sun.Although Jacobs went to school in Karasburg, Jacobs remains connected to the community where she grew up. She said the decline has became increasingly noticeable over time, particularly from the mid-2000s.History Warmbad's documented history dates to 1806, when missionaries Abraham and Christian Albrecht established a mission station there. It subsequently developed into one of the earliest missionary centres in what is now Namibia.The settlement's natural hot springs, known by the Nama name |Aixa-aibes, were an important resource for the local Bondelswarts community –an indigenous Nama (Khoikhoi) clan centered in Warmbad, historically known for their fierce resistance against German colonial rule and the tragic Bondelswarts Rebellion of 1922 against South African administration.The water resource also attracted travellers who were passing through the area.Warmbad became a centre for missionary education. Historical accounts record the establishment of a school in 1868 and a church in 1877.During German colonial rule, a military fort was established in 1905. The wider region experienced armed resistance against German authority, including struggles involving the Bondelswarts and other Nama communities.Changing fortunesWarmbad's decline was closely linked to changes in the region's transport infrastructure.As railway connections expanded during the early 20th century, commercial activity increasingly shifted towards better-connected settlements, including Karasburg. Warmbad gradually lost its importance as a transport stopover, weakening the economic activity that had supported local businesses.Over time, Warmbad struggled to retain its former commercial prominence.The settlement attained district status in 1910. However, its village council was abolished in January 1996, when it was reclassified as a settlement area.Hot springsEfforts to develop Warmbad's tourism potential have been discussed for decades.In June 2004, it was reported that N$2.5 million had been allocated towards a proposed tourism development at the hot springs. The plans included improving visitor facilities and restoring historical buildings.A further report published in September 2005 said the German government had donated more than N$516 000 towards renovating the historic Officer's House, which was intended to accommodate a restaurant and a shop selling local arts and crafts.Community actionResidents and community organisations are pursuing local initiatives to improve the settlement.Jacobs participated in a clean-up campaign involving community members, the constituency office and police last week. The initiative aims to keep Warmbad clean and safe while encouraging residents to take responsibility for their surroundings.ORKCA's wider activities include conservation, environmental education and community development. Its published projects highlight partnerships intended to support local livelihoods and sustainable development.While the clean-up campaign cannot reverse decades of economic decline on its own, it represents a community effort to improve the environment and restore local pride.phillipus@nmh-hub.com.na
