Walvis Bay Maritime Week in full swing

Walvis BayThe annual Walvis Bay Maritime Week is underway, with a packed programme of activities that promise education and great entertainment. The week-long celebration, running from 8 to 13 September at the Civic Centre and various venues across town, is hosted by the municipality in collaboration with Namport, Debmarine Namibia and the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust.
Krischca Stoffels of the Walvis Bay municipality said Maritime Week highlights the importance of the sector while offering something for everyone.
“We’re celebrating all things maritime, and the programme is packed with activities for young and old.”
The programme kicked off with debates between schools representing different regions, with the winners set to be announced during the official opening.
From 10 to 12 September, learners and students can look forward to the EduCorner, a special platform where industry stakeholders share knowledge about the blue economy, maritime careers and opportunities in the sector. Sponsored by Debmarine, the sessions start at 15:00 daily.Other highlights include a community clean-up campaign scheduled for 12 September, with volunteers gathering at Independence Beach at 09:00. Gloves and refuse bags will be provided. “It’s our responsibility to keep our community clean,” Stoffels stressed.
Food lovers can look forward to the seafood cook-off on 12 and 13 September, which is open to amateur cooks. Sponsored by the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust, the competition will conclude with a grand final on Saturday.
Something for everyone
The excitement continues with a street parade on 13 September, starting at 09:30 from Narraville Community Hall and ending at the Civic Centre. The day will also feature a maritime sports festival, including soccer, basketball, volleyball, owela and a five-kilometre fun run.
The festivities will end on a high note with live entertainment featuring artists such as OneBlood, MSunday, Ixa, Janelle Botha, DJ Koli and Keanen Carlse.
“It’s just a great sense of community,” Stoffels added. “There will be exhibitions, vendors offering great maritime deals, and an electric vibe in the air. It’s a chance to support the sector, the town and its development.”
Stoffels encouraged the public not to miss out on the celebration: “Whether you’re interested in seafood, sports, debates or live music, there’s something for everyone at Walvis Bay Maritime Week.”
