Walvis Bay councillor addressees housing problem

Nikanor NangoloSwakopmundA motion has been tabled by Walvis Bay councillor Ryan Gordon in a bid to address homelessness by helping to tackle housing challenges arising from a lack of funding within the community.According to Gordon, the Farm 37 project was initiated by the previous council, and the current council has undertaken to continue with the initiative based on the community’s continuing need.“Progress on the project for the years 2021 and 2022 has yet to commence on account of the availability of funds or resources by the council to date,” he said.“Over the past two years, the expectation that has been created within the community is that the residents of Walvis Bay would gain access to this development based on the housing need of the Walvis Bay community, but it never materialized.“This project has also received an allotment awarded to the council in order to facilitate the development and construction of houses. The council carries a responsibility to account for the funds received and to indicate where those funds have been utilised,” said Gordon.Future outlookHe explained that he was never against the development of Farm 37 but rather about the way important issues were being addressed, for instance, communal toilets.“It would totally undignify our people, not just for their safety and privacy, but also for the fact that we will be moving backwards as this is a past version of ablution and does not fit the vision of Vision 2030.”He requested that the council consider this motion as every citizen of this country needs to feel included and dignified regardless of income or ethnicity.“It is my request that the council should consider above-mentioned developers to make proposals to the council in order to set forward development of the property.”Gordon further emphasised that his motion only includes portions of land and not the whole of Farm 37.“For council to consider that the planning hereof be done in consultation with the people. It may potentially affect them in order to address their interests as well as garner buy in in order to ensure facilitation of certain tasks.”
