Victory after hard-fought game
Sports ReporterThis past weekend saw TransNamib Bowling Club host their annual Mixed Senior Pairs competition.Because the tournament targets players aged 50 or older, the competition is commonly known among bowlers as ‘the Grumpies’.
This year, the green was full, with 12 teams competing. Nine Windhoek teams entered, with two teams visiting from the coast and one team from Tsumeb.
Each team was comprised of one man and one woman. The format of the tournament is Australian pairs, where each player plays with four bowls, but in the following order: player one plays two bowls, then player two plays four bowls. Player one then returns to the mat to play his or her last two bowls.
The teams were divided into two sections of six teams each, and the winners of each section advanced to the finals.

The winners of section A were Horst Zimny and Truda Meaden; Sheena Hawthorn and Ewald Vermeulen won section B.
These two teams tackled each other in the final, and, after an extremely hard-fought game, which went to an extra end, Horst Zimny and Truda Meaden emerged victorious. They won the tournament in the very last bowl, where Truda played a brilliant bowl to pick up the shot and defeat the opposition.
The team that won third place, was the seeded team and defending champions, Amanda Steenkamp and Willie Esterhuizen.
Once again, TransNamib Bowling Club hosted a most enjoyable tournament, which they hope will be played for many years to come.
