Tsumeb engages youth on development

A few days ahead of the Tsumeb Copper Festival, the municipality held a youth conference on Monday to create an environment which nurtures youth potential, mayor Mathews Hangula said. The conference was launched in 2018 with the aim to empower young Namibians in their pursuit of knowledge, skills and opportunities, and was this year held under the theme ‘Celebrating craftsmanship, creativity and excellence in a diverse Namibia’. The mining town’s festival kicks off today, and will draw to a close on Saturday, 2 November.Hangula said through practical initiatives like urban agriculture, educational support and continuous stakeholder engagement, they will be able to provide young people with essential skills in sustainable food production, while educational support and vocational training initiatives equip them with the knowledge and tools needed for economic empowerment. “Additionally, through regular engagement forums, we ensure youth voices are actively included in our community development strategies,” he said. Hangula noted that the theme of the conference resonates with the town's ambitions of ensuring inclusivity by bringing together youthful minds with diverse perspectives and the shared goal of building a brighter future. Vital platformTsumeb Copper Festival committee chairperson Julius Gaeseb said the conference emphasises their commitment to harnessing the diverse talents and perspectives of young people, recognising that each of them brings unique insights which can contribute to the prosperity of the Namibian nation. “Our goals extend beyond mere inspiration. We aim to equip our youth with the necessary tools to lead economic transformation and effect meaningful change in their communities,” he said. He added that the conference stands as a vital platform for cultivating resilience, creativity and economic acumen among the youth. “This will position them as key drivers of Namibia’s socioeconomic development across various sectors, including agriculture, information technology and small and medium enterprise (SME) growth."Gaeseb added that they recognise that the future of the nation rests in the hands of the youth, and are dedicated to creating an enabling environment that fosters growth, creativity and entrepreneurship.
