Temporary closure of Okaukuejo-Namutoni road in Etosha National Park
Visitors to Etosha National Park are being advised of a temporary closure of a section of the Okaukuejo-Namutoni road, effective 1 February 2026, as the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism upgrades tourist gravel roads to low-volume seal roads.
The closure affects the main route from Okaukuejo to King Nehale Gate via Halali detours to Namutoni. In a press statement on Wednesday, the ministry has provided a designated detour route via Gemsboklakte and the newly constructed bypass, covering approximately 38km before connecting to the Salvadora detour, which joins the main road about 47km from Okaukuejo.
During the first phase of the deviation, traffic will temporarily return to the main road just before the Homob comfort stop while contractors complete the remaining section of the new bypass. The ministry expects the entire bypass to be finished by 26 February 2026, after which traffic will be fully redirected onto the new route.
Tourists, service providers, and other park visitors are urged to follow all road signs, observe speed limits, and exercise caution around construction vehicles. The ministry apologises for any inconvenience and thanks the public for their understanding.
For more information or guidance on the traffic deviation, visitors can consult the Okaukuejo Office at +264 67 229 854 or view the maps provided by the park.
