Namibian artist Takunda D. Nyaungwa, known professionally as S.West Takunda, has released his latest song, Plans, featuring award-winning Namibian artist Hitjivirue Katjatenja, better known as Skrypt.

The 27-year-old, whose stage name stands for Southwest Takunda, is a poultry farmer, assistant administrator and entrepreneur who has been making music for about 13 years.

Takunda describes his music career as a process of learning, experimenting and finding his own sound while balancing music with his other responsibilities.

He said Plans was inspired by the “good vibes” in his life at the time.

He initially wrote the song with another artist in mind, but when the artist declined to collaborate, he continued working on it solo.

The song explores how two people can make plans together and see where things go when the chemistry is right and their intentions are genuine.

“At its core, the song is about meeting a woman you genuinely like, having that mutual connection, and being willing to take things further,” he said.

Skrypt initially approached Takunda about remixing Rendezvous, but the focus later shifted to Plans after Skrypt heard a snippet of the song and connected with it.

Finally collaborate

The collaboration holds a deeper personal meaning for Takunda.

Skrypt taught him how to record when he got his first microphone and soundcard, helped him with writing choruses and introduced him to different aspects of making music.

“I’ve known Skrypt since I was 14. He was actually one of my mentors when I was starting out,” Takunda told tjil.

“So, in many ways, having him on Plans feels like something that was long overdue. Everything just aligned naturally,” Takunda said.

Skrypt described Takunda as a younger brother, saying they had discussed collaborating for years.

“I’ve known Takunda for many years, he’s like a little brother to me. We’ve been talking about making music for such a long time and the time has finally come,” he said.

Great visual work

The song was released alongside a music video directed by Takunda’s cousin, Charity Mutumbwa of Ngamburiro Studio. Takunda said she has directed his past three music videos, consistently delivering despite limited resources.

“I trusted her to interpret the song visually in her own way, and she brought her experience and creativity into it,” he said.

Skrypt praised the visual, saying it captures the song’s relaxed character.

“The music video really visualises the easygoing texture of the song. The director did a phenomenal job on translating the song into a visual masterpiece,” he said.

Takunda said the response to Plans has been comforting and overwhelming, adding that he is grateful for the support from his family and friends.

While his work and responsibilities may prevent him from releasing music every month, he said listeners can expect consistent, quality music whenever he does release a new song.

“Whenever I do release something, I want it to be something worth listening to,” Takunda said.
