Statistics agency reports falling inflation rate

Brigitte WeidlichWindhoekNamibia’s inflation rate fell to 3.2 percent in December 2025, compared to 3.4 percent in November, the Namibian Statistics Agency (NSA) reported on Thursday. In October, the inflation rate had reached last year’s peak at 3.6 percent. The agency estimated the annual inflation rate for goods at 2.7 percent, while annual inflation for services stood at 4.0 percent. The average annual inflation for the period from December 2024 to December 2025 was 3.5 percent.The 3.2 percent inflation rate recorded in December 2025 was primarily driven by housing, water, electricity, and fuel. Other fuels contributed 1.1 percentage points, followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, each contributing 0.5 percent. In December 2025, the annual inflation rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages, which account for 16.5 percent of traded goods, was 2.6 percent, compared to 5.9 percent in December 2024.In the previous month, this category recorded a monthly deflation of 0.2 percent, compared with 0.0 percent in November. Food accounts for 14.8 percent of total traded goods, with bread and cereals making up the largest share of household-purchased food at 4.8 percent. Meat accounted for 3.5 percent, sugar, jams, honey, syrup, chocolate, and confectionery 1.4 percent, and vegetables as well as milk, cheese, and eggs each 1.2 percent.Bread and cereals experienced a deflation of 0.5 percent, compared with a very high inflation of 6.7 percent in December 2024. The decline in inflation in this category was mainly reflected in the prices of rice (from 14.1% to 1.1%), maize meal/cereals (from 8.7% to -0.3%), bread (from 7.2% to -1.4%), and cake flour (from 2.0% to -2.3%).
