Standard Bank donates N$50 000 to Oshakati Town Council

Tuyeimo Haidula
The Oshakati Town Council’s mayoral development fund received N$50 000 on Wednesday from Standard Bank Namibia to continue offering support to residents affected by natural disasters as well as those who find themselves destitute.

The fund was established in 2022 with the aim of assisting families, individuals and organisations within the jurisdiction of Oshakati as part of council's social responsibility efforts.

During the official handover, Standard Bank regional manager for the north west, Hendrik Van Wyk, said their decision to support the mayoral development fund is rooted in their core values of inclusivity and empowerment.

Van Wyk said the fund shows that the office of the mayor remains committed to serving its people.

“The initiative is more than just a fund, and it’s a beacon of hope for those affected by unforeseen circumstances,” he said.

Opportunities to thrive

Van Wyk said Standard Bank Namibia believes that every Namibian, regardless of their social or economic standing, deserves an opportunity to thrive.

“By contributing to this fund, we are not only offering immediate relief but also investing in the long-term growth and prosperity of our community,” he said.

Mayor Leonard Hango expressed gratitude for the “immense support” the fund continues to receive from good Samaritans.

“We use the funds to support people who come to the office to ask for assistance. Sport and recreation; we have embarked on the formalisation of our informal settlements, and these areas will now lack facilities for the children living there, so the fund is looking at building facilities for these people,” he said, adding that this will keep youth away from sheebens and allow them to develop their talents.
