Shikongo asks motorists to be patient amid Oshakati police graduation

Tuyeimo Haidula
Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo has pleaded with Oshana region motorists to cooperate with traffic law enforcement during a police graduation ceremony on Friday.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is expected to officiate the main graduation event at Oshakati Stadium.

Shikongo on Tuesday acknowledged that motorists might be irked by the high traffic flow but cautioned that they should maintain order and give right of way to VIP vehicles.

“If you find yourself on the road and police vehicles are approaching, we are not saying jump off the road, but rather move to a side and come to a standstill to allow vehicles to pass, as police know how to manoeuvre the roads,” he said.

On Tuesday, the recruits held a street procession from the Puma Service Station in Ondangwa to the Nored office.

A similar event took place at Ongwediva from the Ongwediva Trade Fair to Ompundja Road on Wednesday, while the Oshakati procession took place from Ompundja Road to Oshakati Stadium.

Substantial growth

“This year’s graduation marks a substantial growth in the force, with 1 780 constables set to take their oath as fully fledged members of the Namibian Police Force,” the police chief said.

Shikongo added that of those expected to graduate, 70 of the recruits are from the men and women network, 200 are from the national youth services and some came from the marginalised groups.

The training started in October and took six months of intensive training, and the remaining months were used for work integrated learning (WIL).

Shikongo stressed that the cadets completed their nine-month training at the Pius Joseph Kaundu, Ruben ‘Danger’ Ashipala, and Simon Mutumba Mutumba Police Training Centres.

Last year, Shikongo said the same venue hosted the graduation of 1 060 cadet constables, an event led by the former President Nangolo Mbumba.

Shikongo invited the public to witness the street processions leading up to the graduation, which will take place at Ondangwa, Ongwediva and Oshakati.

This year’s graduation theme is ‘Together We Stand: Empowered for a Safer Namibia’, which will serve as a guiding principle for the new officers as they embark on their careers.
