Shifidi rejects NamPower’s N$3.4m top job

NamPower’s efforts to lure a former senior employee to replace MD Simson Haulofu hit a brick wall after he allegedly turned down the N$3.4 million annual package.In an interview with Namibian Sun, Set-son Shifidi, who is now the director for electrical, mechanical and renewable energy at Lithon, one of Namibia’s largest engineering consulting firms, confirmed he declined an offer."They did not headhunt me per se, but they asked for my availability to consider an opportunity like that,” he confirmed.“I told them that I’m not interested. I am doing exciting stuff where I am. With the oil and gas industry currently picking up, I’m not interested,” Shifidi added.Haulofu’s term expires on 31 December. Shifidi worked at NamPower for 15 years between 2001 and 2015.He started off as an electrical engineer of system planning and protection before taking on the role of electrical engineer of distribution and electrification.He holds a master's degree in management in energy leadership from the University of Witwatersrand, a master's of business administration (MBA) and a master's of science in electrical engineering, both from Stellenbosch University.Second tryMines and energy minister Modestus Amutse confirmed that NamPower had re-advertised the position after receiving too few suitable applications.“NamPower says they had 12 people who applied, and that there was only one person who qualified, and that’s why they had to re-advertise it,” Amutse said.NamPower’s recruitment policy does not allow it to interview just one qualifying candidate for the Grade 1 managing director position.The five-year managing director contract comes with annual remuneration of N$3.4 million, including salary and benefits.
