Seven in court for alleged N$1.6m theft from Letshego

Seven suspects accused of defrauding Letshego of N$1.6 million made their first appearance in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court yesterday.Godfrey Simasiku (36), Susan Musweu (31), Selby Mutonga (35), Disney Seibeb (32), David Markus (28), Magreth Miguel (23) and Benny Hamutenya (30) appeared before magistrate Sonia Samupofu, who postponed the case to 11 April for further investigations.They allegedly conspired to steal N$1 611 580 from Letshego between 2020 and February 2023.Simasiku, Musweu, Mutonga, Seibeb and Markus were denied bail, while Miguel and Hamutenya were granted bail of N$5 000 each.According to court documents, the suspects unlawfully, with intent to defraud and under false pretense, tricked Letshego into believing that a certain Meriam Sitentu applied for a loan from the company, inducing it to pay out an amount of N$1.6 million.Murder accused on the runIn an unrelated matter, police in the Kavango East Region are appealing for public assistance to trace the whereabouts of murder and attempted murder accused Kandere Faustinus Shinkanda (30), who escaped from custody on Wednesday at the Ndiyona Police Station.Shinkanda allegedly shot and killed his 84-year-old grandfather Mbambi Shinkanda with an AK47 automatic assault rifle last September at Mabushe village. This after accusing the older man of being responsible for his [Shinkanda’s] sleepless nights and sexual dreams involving the deceased.Shinkanda was arrested just a day before the second suspect, self-proclaimed traditional healer Linyando Murayi (39), handed himself over to the police. Murayi allegedly previously told Shinkanda that his grandfather was a witch.This was revealed during a Namibian Sun probe into the death of Mbambi, who succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest on 11 September 2023. The incident happened around 19:30 while Mbambi was having dinner with his wife, Annarosa Kashova Mungenga (92). Mungenga was shot in the left thigh, but survived.Shinkanda and his co-accused Murayi made their first appearance on 20 September 2023 at the Rundu Magistrate’s Court before magistrate Selma Shiiga, who postponed the case to 16 January 2024 due to the absence of legal representation.According to the acting regional commander, deputy commissioner Eino Nambahu, Shinkanda escaped at around 12:00. "The suspect is believed to have taken the western direction of Ndiyona to the surrounding villages of Mupapama, Mabushe, Ndongalinena and Mbwata. Also possibly inland, to the farms surrounding Ndiyona, Sipandu, Cua, Muduva conservancy, Dosa, Ndonga Linena, Koro, Kapupaidi and Baramasoni areas," he said.He further cautioned members of the public to be vigilant as the suspect is considered dangerous.Anyone with information about Shinkanda&#039;s whereabouts is urged to contact Deputy Commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu on 081 293 0991 or 081 378 3818, chief inspector John Kakoro at 081 258 2334 or the nearest police station.nikanor@erongo.com.na
