Savannah Comedy’s roast returns with Jericho in the hot seat

Savannah Comedy Hour will host its celebrity roast on 22 October at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC), with Namibian Hip Hop award-winning artist Jericho set to be the centre of the jokes. The event is a special edition of Savannah Comedy Hour’s regular monthly comedy show and aims to offer audiences a different form of comedy while celebrating Namibian celebrities.According to organiser and co-founder Vernon van Vyk, the celebrity roast is the third edition of the event since its inception, following the roast of Zuluboy in 2022 and the roast of Yeezir in 2023.“The celebrity roast is a special edition to our regular monthly event, and the aim is to give the audience something different and at the same time celebrate our celebrities through comedy,” Van Vyk said.Jericho was approached about the roast and was reportedly excited and open to the idea from the beginning.“He’s been through a lot publicly in his career, but he is prepared to take whatever shots are thrown at him at the roast,” van Vyk said. However, the rapper will not simply be sitting through the jokes. He will have an opportunity to respond to the comedians and roast members of the panel and potentially members of the audience.“He will definitely have the right to respond and also roast everyone on the panel and maybe even in the crowd,” Van Vyk said.According to Van Vyk, Jericho’s response will form the closing segment of the show.Fresh menuCo-founder, talent manager and content writer of Savannah Comedy Hour, Aloys Murorua, also known as Axarob, said the roast was brought back because the comedy scene needed different forms of comedy.“The celebrity roast is something we’ve done before but had stopped for a bit and we decided to bring it back as the comedy scene needs comedy in all its different forms,” Murorua said.Murorua said Jericho was selected because of his long-standing position in the Namibian music industry and his well-documented career.“We chose Jericho because, first and foremost, he’s a legend of the Namibian music industry and has skin in the game,” he said.He added that Jericho’s career, including its highs and lows, provides comedians with plenty of material, while his willingness to try new things has also made him a suitable participant.“He is actively working with us to make the roast one of the most memorable ones,” Murorua said.Unlike a regular comedy show, where comedians perform individual sets, the roast will have one central objective: to make fun of the guest and each other while keeping the evening entertaining.“People should definitely come out to see how funny the comics can be when given the license to be completely offside,” Murorua said. The evening will also feature special guests alongside a panel of comedians, while the production will be bigger than the usual monthly show.A surprise musical performance is also planned.Murorua teased that Jericho will not be the only one delivering jokes, saying Jericho will also have “some roasts back”.Tickets are priced at N$250, with organisers promising an evening built around comedy, music and the return of the celebrity roast format. As Murorua put it, audiences can expect “the best ‘braai’ that has no meat.”
