Rundu school sends learners home early over full septic tanks

Teachers at Sikanduko Junior Primary and Sikanduko Combined School in Rundu have been sending learners home early because the septic tanks serving the schools’ toilets are full, leaving both learners and teachers without adequate toilet facilities.

The problem has persisted for two weeks and is disrupting teaching and learning at the schools, according to school officials.

Rundu West circuit Education inspector Regina Haingura confirmed that her office is aware of the situation and said the ministry’s maintenance department had been informed.

Haingura said the previous company contracted to empty the septic tanks had completed its contract, while a new tender had been awarded but the paperwork had not yet been finalised.

She said the tanks were expected to be emptied over the weekend, but a breakdown involving the tanking equipment caused a further delay.

Haingura promised that the ministry’s maintenance department would resolve the issue today.
