Rundu residents dispute drop in crime stats
NEWS IN SHORT
Rundu resident Ezekiel Kanyanga told Namibian Sun on Friday that crime in his neighbourhood is worsening, despite officials claiming a decline in crime rates.
“We’re scared to walk around at night, people are still getting robbed,” he said. Kanyanga added that many crimes go unreported due to the lack of police presence around the town.
He made these remarks after Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka last week announced during his state of the region address that the region’s crime rate had dropped by 10% in the 2024/25 financial year. The governor cited 1 367 theft cases, 719 housebreakings, 378 fraud cases, 282 gender-based violence incidents, and 276 robberies.
