Phatboy Lutor takes ownership with ‘Mwene Woka Tomeno’

Namibian rapper Ronaldo Mutota, who performs as Phatboy Lutor, is preparing to release his upcoming EP, Mwene Woka Tomeno, on 13 November. The project will be introduced to fans at a listening party at Vinyls Music Cafe on 12 November, giving them an opportunity to experience the music before its official release.Speaking to tjil, Phatboy Lutor explained that Mwene Woka Tomeno translates to “The Owner of the Slaughterhouse”, a title that represents ownership, dominance, survival and the ability to stand your ground regardless of what life throws at you.“For me, the slaughterhouse is more than just a title, it's a representation of my journey, my environment and the experiences that have shaped me as an artist and as a person,” he said.He explained that the title also represents the sacrifices he has made, the obstacles he has overcome and his determination to establish his own space in the music industry.“I'm not waiting for someone to give me a seat at the table. I've built my own space, and I'm inviting people into my world,” Phatboy Lutor said. The EP explores different aspects of his life, including personal experiences, struggles, ambition, growth, relationships and success. According to Phatboy Lutor, the project carries different emotions, with some records expressing confidence while others reveal a more reflective and vulnerable side of him.“Ultimately, it's about my journey, but I believe many people will find pieces of their own stories within it,” he said.New soundMusically, the project also introduces a different direction from the hip-hop sound Phatboy Lutor is traditionally known for.His manager, Nikanor Nangolo, told tjil the decision to host a listening party was inspired by the new sound the rapper intends to introduce.“The sound can best be described as a revived, high-energy version of kwaito, infused with a fresh intensity, and is a departure from the hip-hop sound Phatboy Lutor is traditionally known for,” Nangolo said.He added that the project aims to foster an inclusive music culture where everyone can be part of the experience while creating a deeper connection between the rapper and his audience.Connecting with audiencesPhatboy Lutor said he considers himself a versatile artist but wanted the EP to have a clear direction rather than simply showcase different genres.“What makes this EP different is its direction and the level of thought behind it. I'm not just releasing songs, I'm putting together a body of work that represents where I am musically, creatively and personally at this point in my career,” he said.He said the listening party is an opportunity to bring together people who have been part of his journey and allow them to connect with the stories behind the records.Following the official release, Nangolo said the project will be supported by a club tour across Windhoek. A series of high-definition music videos will also be rolled out in the weeks following the release.Phatboy Lutor hopes listeners will leave the listening party with a better understanding of who he is as an artist and what the project represents.“Sometimes you have to create your own space and become the owner of it,” he said.
