Parliamentarians engage stakeholders ahead of oversight visits

The parliamentary standing committee on education, youth, civic relations and community development has launched its first formal stakeholder engagement since its establishment under the 8th Parliament.

Speaking at a consultative workshop held in Oshakati this week, committee chairperson Marlyn Mbakera said the engagement aims to foster cooperation between parliament and institutions involved in education, youth development, civic relations and community advancement.

“This week’s engagements are foundational and necessary in building informed and cooperative relationships with actors delivering essential services to our people,” Mbakera noted.

“Our goal is to gain a practical understanding of how parliament can support your work,” she added, emphasising the importance of collaboration at all levels of governance.

The workshop comes ahead of the committee’s scheduled oversight visits to government-funded projects in the //Kharas, Hardap and Omaheke regions, with additional visits planned for Ohangwena, Kavango West and Kavango East.

Mbakera noted that the newly constituted committee brings together mandates previously spread across several committees in the 7th Parliament, allowing for a more integrated and targeted approach to key national sectors.

Practical insight

She reiterated the committee’s commitment to align parliamentary functions, including law-making, oversight, and representation, with national development priorities, particularly those outlined in the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6) under the education, innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts, and Culture ministry.

Mbakera said the consultative workshop marks a milestone in the committee’s efforts to strengthen civic engagement and improve service delivery through enhanced legislative oversight and strategic partnerships.
