NamWater announced on Monday that the extension and upgrade of the Outapi Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is progressing steadily.

The water utility said the plant is taking shape as they move forward with plans to expand and upgrade the facility, aiming to meet the growing water needs of Outapi and surrounding communities in the Omusati region.

The project is valued at N$141.8 million and is expected to be completed within 16 months.

NamWater spokesperson Lot Ndamanomhata described the project as a strategic response to rising demand, driven by urbanisation and population growth.

Commissioned in 2001, the existing plant has served as a vital water source for over two decades. “However, it has now reached its limit,” Ndamanomhata said. “This upgrade will more than double the current capacity, from 180 cubic metres per hour to 438 cubic metres per hour, ensuring a reliable and sustainable water supply for years to come.”

He said key highlights of the project include increased water capacity to meet current and future demand, enhanced water quality to comply with Namibia’s updated water quality standards and support for regional growth by ensuring access to safe, clean water for households, businesses and industries.

Ndamanomhata added that the project is spearheaded through a professional partnership between China Jiangxi International and Homefin Properties Joint Venture, combining international and local expertise to ensure high-quality results.
