Oshana governor Hofni Iipinge has called on residents to embrace sustainable agriculture, climate-smart farming and youth involvement to secure food security and a prosperous future for the region.Speaking at the Oshipe Festival held in the Uuvudhiya constituency in the Oshana region on Friday, Iipinge said the path toward food self-sufficiency is ongoing.
He urged communities to ensure that “no family goes to bed hungry, no child misses school because of an empty stomach, and no elder suffers in silence.”
He added: “We must continue to invest in sustainable agriculture and involve our youth in agricultural entrepreneurship so we can secure a prosperous future for the generations to come.”
Farm with purpose
The governor highlighted progress under a memorandum of understanding between the Oshana Regional Council and the University of Namibia, which has resulted in the establishment of crop fields in the Okatyali, Uukwiyuushona, Uuvudhiya and Ompundja constituencies.
This year’s harvest, boosted by good rains and collective effort, yielded six tonnes of maize and 310 kilograms of beans, a significant improvement from the project’s first modest harvest.
“This is a testimony to what is possible when vision meets commitment,” Iipinge said.
He emphasised that Oshipe is more than an agricultural festival; it is also a platform for community solidarity and compassion. The governor urged residents to act as custodians of the land by farming with purpose, hope and gratitude.
