Oshakati launches facility profiling in informal areas
The Oshakati Town Council has announced the start of a pilot Informal Settlement Facility Profiling exercise, aimed at documenting the availability and condition of key services and facilities within informal settlements.
The initiative, led by the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) in partnership with UN-Habitat and UNITAC, will run from 22 September to 3 October 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, through the Chief Executive Officer’s office council said the profiling will cover schools, health facilities, water points, sanitation services, electricity access points, and markets.
Council explained that the information gathered will help fill data gaps in national registers and guide planning, housing delivery, and service provision at both local and national levels.
It further state that the exercise supports Namibia’s National Development Plan 6 (NDP6), which promotes sustainable urban development, housing, and spatial transformation.
It will also feed into the Namibia Housing Information System (NHIS) to strengthen service delivery and complement international commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 11).
“This work is important for Namibia as it contributes directly to the objectives of NDP6 while also improving long-term housing and urban planning,” the notice read in part.
Residents are encouraged to cooperate with officials during the profiling exercise.
