Oshakati celebrates International Youth Day
Young people from all over the country gathered at the Oshakati Independence Stadium for the celebration of International Youth Day last Friday.
The day, which kicked off with a street parade, was commemorated under theme ‘Green skills for youth: Towards a sustainable world’.
Oshakati mayor Leonard Hango said the theme reminds us of the immense power that lies within the youth to create positive change, to inspire innovation and to drive progress across the globe.
“As we come together to commemorate this special occasion, we are reminded that the dreams, passions and voices of our youth are not only our hope, but also the driving force behind a more inclusive, sustainable and harmonious world.”
He said while the world faces many challenges today, in the face of adversity, it is young minds that shine the brightest.
From climate action and social justice to technological advancements and artistic expressions, the youth are at the forefront of endeavours, igniting transformations that touch lives, Hango said.
“International Youth Day serves as a platform to not only celebrate our young achievers, but also to encourage and empower every young person present here to be the change they wish to see. Each one of you can make a difference, whether through your creativity, your activism, your innovation or your compassion.”
The Africa we want
Oshana regional chairperson Andreas Uutoni, who delivered the keynote address on behalf of Oshana governor Elia Irimari, said Africans need to embrace the African agenda 2063 of building the Africa they want.
This represents Africa's development blueprint to achieve inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development, he said. Uutoni added that they want the youth to champion, be at the forefront and realise this vision so that - in unison - they can create a better future for the people.
"The government remains committed to empowering the youth, and integrating the youth within the mainstream economy.”
He added that a sustainable future is possible, but said it is crucial to mobilise the young generation to see it as a reality by forming global partnerships towards a common goal.
