Ongwediva auctions off 100 stray pigs

Tuyeimo Haidula
The Ongwediva Town Council on Wednesday invited residents to participate in the auction of 100 impounded pigs that have not been redeemed or reclaimed by their owners.

The action is taking place in accordance with local authority regulations.

The auction will be held at the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair kraals, starting at 9:00, with registration beginning at 08:00 for a non-refundable fee of N$200.

Council spokesperson Ottilie Shingenge said among the 100 pigs, 29 are large, 17 are medium, 46 are small and eight are piglets.

Among the animals, some were impounded as far back as 2022, he added.

The owners of the impounded animals are unknown, and attempts to contact them have been unsuccessful, he explained.

The auction follows the decision by the town's councillors to seek permission from the court to auction the impounded animals, in accordance with usual procedures.

Rights of owners

A similar auction was held in 2021, when the council auctioned 15 goats and 33 pigs. The animals were sold after their owners failed to claim them within 30 days, despite notifications being made in newspapers and on other platforms.

The goats and pigs had been impounded as of February 2020.

Residents of Ongwediva are familiar with the process for impounding stray animals in the town, and every resident has the right to visit the kraal to reclaim their animals from the council.
