Ondonga to host Omagongo festival next month

The annual Omagongo Cultural Festival will be held next month at Onambango Palace in the Oshana Region.

King Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo, who will be the host, announced that this will be the second time the Ondonga Traditional Authority hosts the event since its inception in 2015.

The hosting of the festival rotates between the eight northern traditional authorities to commemorate the marula fruit harvest.

Late King Immanuel Kauluma Elifas first hosted it for the Aandonga in 2016. Late president Hage Geingob graced the occasion.

Nahas Angula, chairperson of the festival's organising committee, announced in a press statement on Monday that the event serves as a platform to celebrate Aawambo culture and foster unity among Namibian people.

He said Nangolo has chosen to dedicate this year’s festival towards being deliberate about cultural preservation by including the youth.

The Ondonga Traditional Authority invited President Nangolo Mbumba, ministers and traditional authorities, governors from all 14 regions, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the business community, the media and members of the public to attend the festival.

“Your presence at this festival would not only honour the Aawambo culture, but will also symbolise unity and our collective role in supporting the government’s efforts of cultural inclusivity,” Nangolo said.

The event is expected to begin on 24 May and is expected to run until 26 May, with the official opening scheduled for 25 May at 10:00.

“For the visitors looking for excitement and cultural experiences, there are expected to be entertainment activities as well as performances by various music artists and cultural troupes throughout the day and in the evenings,” Angula said.

Food and beverages will be sold. Members of the public can apply for a stall by contacting the traditional authority.
