Over N$740 000 was raised for this year's Ondangwa Trade and Industrial Exhibition at a gala dinner on Saturday.

Hosted by the Ondangwa Town Council, the 12th annual expo, scheduled to take place from 27 June until 5 July, will be held under the theme 'Building Resilient Industries Through Innovation and Smart Partnership'.

Speaking at the event this weekend, Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare applauded the council for its unwavering commitment to economic development and industrialisation.

The annual trade fair, Ngurare said, plays a transformative role in fostering entrepreneurship, enhancing innovation and advancing Namibia’s Vision 2030.

“This initiative is not just about trade; it is about empowering local businesses, creating opportunities for the informal sector and unlocking the industrial potential of northern Namibia,” the prime minister said.

He added that the annual event serves as a key platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services while also enabling vital networking and business development opportunities.

It also capitalises on Ondangwa’s strategic infrastructure, including rail links, an airport, and its proximity to the Angolan market to attract regional investment, he added.

Supportive government policies

Ngurare took the opportunity to encourage local businesses to expand their presence in manufacturing and value addition, leveraging supportive government policies such as infant industry protection, the 'Growth at Home' strategy, industrialisation development policy and public-private partnerships.

He also urged government institutions to ensure smooth relations with the business community, particularly Namibian entrepreneurs.

“In the same vein, I request our Namibian companies to be mindful that when you are dealing with government, bear in mind that it is your government. If there is a service to be delivered, do so with honesty and urgency,” Ngurare said.

The premier, in his personal capacity, pledged N$5 000, followed by donations from other participants, including corporate entities, government institutions, local businesses and individuals.

A total of N$740 600 was pledged.

Boosting partnerships

Ngurare commended traditional leaders, particularly the Omukwaniilwa of Ondonga Traditional Authority, Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo, for championing collaboration between cultural institutions and the business community.

“This interface is essential in combating poverty, unemployment and hunger,” he remarked.

Ngurare underlined that Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has prioritised sectors like agriculture, youth empowerment, education, health and the creative industries.

Local authorities, such as Ondangwa, are recognised as key partners in implementing national development goals.

“This is not just an event for Ondangwa; it is a catalyst for regional economic growth. Let us support it generously,” he said.
