Ondangwa begins road works at Onguta location

Tuyeimo Haidula
The Ondangwa Town Council has officially handed over Extension 28, popularly known as the Onguta road project, to Palladium Civil Engineering (Pty) Ltd.

The council said this is a “significant development”, which marks a step in their commitment to enhancing infrastructure and accessibility for its residents and improving the conditions for one of the oldest townships.

Ondangwa council spokesperson Petrina Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said the road will improve access to Onguta Primary School and the Onguta Parish once completed.

“The project is expected to significantly ease mobility within the township and its surrounding areas, forming a key component of the broader Ondangwa road master plan,” Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said.

She added that the council recently completed sewer and water servicing in Extension 28.

Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said Onguta had no proper planning and demarcation, often loaded by homes built encroaching on planned road reserves due to informal development.

Public open spaces

She said this is no longer the case, as the council has formalised the area and proper planning, surveying, registration, and official gazetting has been done.

Onguta now encompasses a total of 367 erven designated for various land uses. Of these, 178 erven have been serviced and occupied.

“The layout includes 131 residential plots, 51 zoned for business, and seven designated public open spaces.

This formalization allows residents of Extension 28 to register their properties now and obtain title deeds, ensuring formal ownership and security of tenure,” Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said.

She said the construction, valued at N$12.8 million, is anticipated to be completed within seven months.

Shitalangaho-Mutikisha urged all residents of Extension 28 and the general public to cooperate fully during the construction period.

“Residents should observe all road signs, detours, and safety instructions in place, and allow the contractor to carry out the work without interruption to ensure timely completion and the safety of everyone in the area,” she said.
