Omuthiya urges owners of undeveloped plots to debush by June

Tuyeimo Haidula
The Omuthiya Town Council has called on all property owners with undeveloped erven within the town boundaries to clear and debush their plots by 1 June.

The exercise is part of a town-wide initiative to maintain cleanliness, safety, and order.

Council public relations officer Martha Andreas issued a public notice stating that those who fail to comply with the directive may result in the municipality clearing the plots on their behalf and cost in line with municipal regulations.

Andreas said that owners unable to clear their plots in an alternative arrangement may formally request the council to perform the clearing at a prescribed fee.

She said the move comes as part of Omuthiya’s broader efforts to prevent illegal dumping, reduce fire hazards, and improve the general appearance and safety of the town.

Residents and officials have flagged Overgrown and uncleared erven as contributing to litter accumulation, vermin infestation, and criminal hiding spots.

The council appreciated residents and property owners who have already taken steps to maintain their properties and urged others to do the same before the deadline.

“For further inquiries, property owners are encouraged to contact the Omuthiya Town Council directly,” Andreas said.

The council clarified that for now, plots will not be repossessed.

When one moves around Omuthiya, the impression is that residential and business land is available, but this is not the case.

The plots in the town have been sold, but for years remain undeveloped.

In past years, the Omuthiya council had threatened to repossess ervens because the owners had failed to develop them over a two-year window period that they were given to build houses or businesses on these plots. Although some heeded the call and developed their plots, many remain the same.
