As Namibia celebrated African Day with the rest of the continent last week, former president Sam Nujoma called on Namibians to rededicate themselves to the idea of Pan-Africanism and remain vigilant against those who want to reverse the gains of the revolution.
Nujoma made the remarks during the unveiling of a memorial to liberation struggle icon Wilbard Nelundu Shimooshili Emvula at Ehafo LyaNelundu village in the Uukwiyu-Uushona constituency on Wednesday last week.
He said Namibians should emulate the good deeds of departed veterans by shunning tribalism, regionalism, factionalism, and gender-based violence and unite as ‘One Namibia, One Nation’.
Nujoma said Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere and many others formed the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to fight for the independence of the African continent and unite all African people at home and those in the diaspora.
“When the OAU was transformed into the African Union, it revived the idea of a United States of Africa, advocating for a single African military force, a single currency and a single passport,” he said.
Swapo regional coordinator for Oshana, Samuel Nelongo, said the African Union was established with the sole purpose to unite all African states and governments to provide necessary moral, material and financial support to all liberation movements in Africa and to ensure a free and independent Africa.
