NHE hands Over 30 new houses in Omuthiya, pledges to deliver 2 000 homes annually

Tuyeimo Haidula
The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) officially handed over 30 newly constructed houses to beneficiaries in Omuthiya on Wednesday, reaffirming its commitment to accelerating the delivery of affordable housing across Namibia.

The 30 houses handed over this week were built for N$5.7 million, with local contractor Gongaleni Investment completing the project ahead of schedule—the construction phase employed 70 people from the Oshikoto region.

This latest handover brings the total number of houses delivered by NHE in Omuthiya to 80 in just 12 months, with the enterprise vowing to accelerate its efforts to meet the national housing demand.

Ready to deliver

Speaking at the ceremony, NHE board chairperson Toska Sem announced the institution’s ambitious target of constructing 2 000 houses annually from the 2025/26 financial year onwards.

“The task is clear, and NHE is ready to deliver, with special emphasis on the National Informal Settlement Upgrading Project,” Sem said.

The project, driven by the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, enables low-income earners to access formal housing at affordable monthly repayments starting from N$400 for one-bedroom homes.

To support this goal, she stated that NHE recently conducted a nationwide mission to engage local authorities on land availability, resulting in the securing of over 2 500 plots across various towns, including Swakopmund, Eenhana, Nkurenkuru, Rundu, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, and Katima Mulilo.

Affordable homes

Sem praised local authorities for their partnership and called for continued collaboration beyond the informal settlement upgrade initiative.

She emphasised that NHE’s focus remains on delivering affordable homes without compromising structural quality.

“The newly introduced 2025/26 - 2028/29 Integrated Strategic Business Plan will guide the organisation’s operations, focusing on business growth, operational excellence, and customer service,” Sem said.

She urged beneficiaries to take care of their properties and remain consistent with their monthly repayments, enabling NHE to continue expanding home ownership opportunities nationwide.

“Our mandate is not just to build houses but to uplift communities by creating jobs and empowering Namibians through property ownership,” Sem said.
