New Eengodi borehole brings relief

Oshikoto governor Sacky Kathindi on Monday commissioned a new borehole at Eengodi, describing it as a crucial intervention amid a worsening water crisis in the region.

Kathindi also convened an urgent high-level meeting later with key stakeholders to map out immediate and long-term solutions to the region’s persistent water shortages.

The engagement included officials from the agriculture ministry, NamWater, traditional authorities and regional and local authority leaders. The aim was to address the severe water challenges that continue to affect villages, farms and public institutions across Oshikoto.

Kathindi said access to clean and reliable water remains a “lifeline” for communities, particularly in drought-prone areas. He emphasised that the new borehole represents a concrete step toward restoring dignity, supporting livelihoods and improving development outcomes in Eengodi and the wider region.

“Yet, as we celebrate this milestone, we must also confront the urgent reality: Oshikoto continues to face severe water crises. Many of our villages, farms and institutions remain without reliable access to water. This situation demands swift, coordinated and strategic action,” he said.

He described the project as a product of collective effort, involving government, traditional leaders, local authorities, technical teams and the community. Kathindi commended the people of Eengodi for their resilience and patience, noting that their determination made the project possible.

He urged residents to safeguard the new borehole and use it responsibly, saying it should serve as a source of pride, unity and hope for the community.

“The commissioning of this borehole is not the end of our journey. It is part of a broader, sustained effort to secure water security for every household in our region,” Kathindi said.

NamWater CEO Abraham Nehemia said they remain committed to bringing water services closer to the people, and even though they might fall short at times, they will work with the regional leadership to improve the crises.
