Works and transport minister Veikko Nekundi this week officiated the groundbreaking of the Omuthiya–Elambo road, a N$188.6 million project scheduled for completion in two years.Nekundi said the 58-kilometre project, which is expected to generate more than 750 jobs, includes the construction of access roads to Alweendo Combined School, Amweelo Primary School, Onamishu Combined School, Evale Combined School and Onamishu Clinic.
“Once completed, this road will provide safer and quicker access to essential services,” he said.
“It will reduce travel time for parents taking children to school, patients accessing healthcare and farmers bringing produce to market.”
Local empowerment
The minister said under a new policy directive, which went into effect in April, at least one-third of jobs and one-third of subcontractor appointments will be reserved for local residents and businesses.
He added that the project will also boost small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through subcontracting opportunities, allowing them to gain valuable construction skills and strengthen their role in the industry.
The project’s main contractor is the Ondjove & Royal Contractor Joint Venture, a 100% Namibian-owned partnership. Supervision will be provided by Bicon Namibia JV Dunamis Engineering, with the Roads Authority overseeing overall management.
Other subcontractors appointed are CHW Trading and KAI Engineering & Fabrication for concrete works, and PIH Investment and Borromean Contractors for earthworks.
The work is co-funded by the Namibian government and the KfW Development Bank of Germany.
