NDF to deploy 400 soldiers to Karasburg in base expansion push
The Namibia Defence Force says it will deploy about 400 soldiers to Karasburg from as early as 29 April 2026, a move expected to reshape the southern town through the expansion of military infrastructure and related economic activity.
The announcement was made during a strategic consultation session between a delegation led by NDF Commander Major General Aktofel Nambahu and the Karasburg Town Council (KTC) on 9 March.
During the engagement, Nambahu informed the council that the planned deployment forms part of a broader expansion of the military base in the town, which is expected to unlock development opportunities for both Karasburg and the surrounding region.
Discussions between the NDF and KTC focused on strengthening collaboration to ensure the smooth implementation of the planned developments.
Key areas of cooperation include the expansion and upgrading of the existing military base, as well as the development of supporting infrastructure.
Among the projects discussed are the construction of sports facilities that could benefit both the military and the local community, the establishment of a shooting range, and the development and improvement of an airstrip to support operations.
The Karasburg Town Council welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to stimulate local economic growth.
“The deployment of soldiers and development of infrastructure will have a positive economic and social impact on Karasburg by creating opportunities for local businesses, service providers, and the development of the community,” the council said.
