NASCAM tightens music licensing enforcement

Field inspectors deployed
Jorge Dos Santos

The Namibian Society of Composers and Authors of Music (NASCAM) held a press briefing at NASCAM House in Windhoek today to remind businesses and institutions of the requirements for using copyrighted music in public spaces.

NASCAM acting vice-chairperson Ferdinand Gertze said anyone who performs, plays or broadcasts copyrighted music in public is required to obtain a valid music licence. He said the requirement applies to music played locally, nationally or internationally.

According to Gertze, failure to obtain a licence could result in a fine of N$12 000 or up to three years in prison, or a fine of N$20 000 or up to five years in prison, depending on the offence.

NASCAM is working with the Namibian Police Force (Nampol) and City Police to enforce the licensing requirements.

The society has also appointed seven field inspectors who will be based in different regions to monitor compliance and assist with enforcement.
