Residents of Okahandja are up in arms over what they deem poor service delivery at the hands of the municipality.Residents say municipal accounts are not being managed well and are bemoaning the state of the town&#039;s roads and poor refuse removal services.On Friday, community mobiliser, Beres Steenkamp read from an official petition addressed to the municipality, in which the residents said they were tired of the poor service delivery at the Garden Town."The town is in a state of unnatural hygiene. We have over 10 drains that are overflowing, and one can only imagine the smell in the air. Our environment has become a breeding ground for bacteria and diseases," Steenkamp said."The lack of strategic plans in the municipality for expansion and growth is a challenge and thus makes service delivery poor. Our road infrastructure can be compared to that of villages and rural areas. Our roads have become one with potholes; deterioration is an understatement," he stressed.Shine a lightThe petitioners also said they "demand transparency in our procurement committee. The community needs to be involved and [be] informed about tender processes to ensure fairness and accountability when service providers fail the community," he said."We want a five-year integration development plan for our town. We demand a performance review from each head of department. We want an infrastructure development plan that is specific to each location within Okahandja," Steenkamp underlined.The petitioners also demanded the municipality lay bare its financial statements for scrutiny."We demand transparency in the municipality&#039;s financial statements. We want the past audits of the past years to be explained, and we expect that 2023 will be in good standing," he said.Deadline givenThe petitioners demanded the municipality respond within seven days to their demands.The petition was handed over to Okahandja municipality CEO Alfons Tjitombo in the presence of deputy minister of urban and rural development Natalia Goagoses./Goagoses said it was incumbent on the municipal leaders to address the concerns of the residents."Those who are not working, report them to me, because it’s their work to give attention to these things. They are hiding in the name of either politics or laziness instead of working. Report them to me so that I can deal with them," she said.
