MTC donates plots to Oniipa residents
Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) on Friday handed over title deeds to 113 residents of Oniipa town who became the first beneficiaries of the MTC Land Delivery Project.
The MTC Land Delivery Project, which was launched in 2021, is a three-year programme designed to address the issue of landlessness in selected towns by delivering affordable land to low-income earners through Development Workshop Namibia (DWN).
MTC partnered with the Oniipa town council and the Oniipa ELCIN Church to help low-income households to obtain serviced plots at affordable prices.
MTC’s managing director, Licky Erastus, said the MTC Land Delivery Project is designed to enable people to acquire at least 300 square metres of land at a reasonable price as low as N$15 000.
This amount can be paid off over 12 months, after which the buyer will own the title deed to the land and can use that as security to finance the building of a home.
“MTC has therefore committed a sum of N$2 million to aid selected local authorities to deliver 1 585 low-cost plots for housing in four towns by the end of September this year. Of the four towns, Oniipa is the first one to benefit, getting 113 plots.
"The subsequent planned towns are Okakarara to receive 707 plots, Stampriet 282, and Otjiwarongo 483,” Erastus said.
He added that if one can get land at a reasonable price in the shortest time possible, it becomes a stepping-stone towards formalising informal settlements while creating a land ownership economy for all Namibians.
Urban minister Erastus Uutoni said the Namibian population continues to grow, resulting in more residents demanding housing.
The ministry has redoubled efforts to provide access to housing for all citizens, but joint efforts are essential because the government alone cannot remedy the land and housing issue.
Uutoni said the public and private sectors are encouraged to pool resources for inclusive, equitable and innovative strategies such as the MTC Land Delivery initiative.
The deputy mayor of Oniipa, Patemoshala Nakanyala, thanked MTC for its efforts effort towards poverty alleviation in Namibia.
Nakanyala congratulated the recipients of the new plots and assured Oniipa residents of the council’s commitment to service delivery.
