Mid-term election defeat an indictment on Trump – analysts

US president Donald Trump's Republican Party has lost control of both houses of Congress in a crushing midterm election defeat, drawing sharp criticism of his economic and foreign policies from Namibian political commentators and former Botswana president Ian Khama. The Democratic victory comes amid rising living costs and growing public dissatisfaction with the war in Iran, which has pushed up energy prices and increased pressure on American households.During the campaign, Democrats linked Trump's foreign policy decisions to domestic economic hardship, making the war and its financial consequences major election issues.Trump had spent the final weeks of the campaign urging Americans to vote as though he were on the ballot, effectively turning the elections into a referendum on his presidency. However, as the results showed Republicans losing control of Congress, he sought to distance himself from the outcome."I wasn’t on the ballot, and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” he declared on social media.Political scientist and former Namibian parliamentarian Maximalliant Katjimune described the results as a rejection of Trump's leadership and the policies pursued during his second term.“It is an absolute indictment and rejection of the Trump administration. Trump came in for his second term on a ticket of ending wars and lowering the cost of living for Americans."Instead, he has done the complete opposite. Not only has he started new wars, but he has further destabilised the globe and raised the cost of living in America and around the world,” Katjimune said.Decisive blowKatjimune said the defeat had weakened Trump's presidency and would make it more difficult for him to pursue his political agenda without resistance from Congress.“With the Democrats now having won both houses, I expect them to rope Trump in terms of accountability. I expect that Trump will scale down on some of his major wars and catastrophic policies which have impacted the cost of living, and many around the world should witness some form of relief within the medium to longer term,” Katjimune said.Political commentator Ndumba Kamwanyah agreed that Democratic control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate represented a significant setback for the American president.“It suggests that American voters are increasingly concerned about the direction of his presidency, particularly the economy, the cost of living and his foreign policy decisions,” he said.Kamwanyah said the election outcome also carried implications for Namibia, particularly because of America's influence over international trade, investment, energy markets and global economic conditions.Kamwanyah said decisions made in Washington affect global trade, fuel prices, investment and economic stability, while Democratic control of Congress would limit Trump's political freedom.“Democrats will have greater powers to scrutinise his administration, challenge spending decisions, investigate government conduct and block or delay some of his legislative priorities,” he said.He attributed the Democratic gains partly to rising living costs, worsened by the war with Iran.“The war in Iran has intensified these pressures by disrupting oil supplies and shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz,” Kamwanyah saidDespite the Republican defeat, Kamwanyah cautioned against expecting an immediate or dramatic change in American foreign policy towards Africa. He said Namibia should continue pursuing economic cooperation with Washington, regardless of the political differences between the American administration and African governments."Our relationship with the United States should not be viewed exclusively through the lens of political differences between Washington and African governments. There are important opportunities in energy, critical minerals, agriculture, technology, trade and investment,” he said.Khama celebrates Trump's defeatFormer Botswana president, Khama, welcomed the election results, drawing parallels between the Democratic victory in the United States and the defeat of the Botswana Democratic Party in his country's 2024 general election.Khama expressed his satisfaction on social media as the results emerged, describing the outcome as another rejection of a political leader by voters.Former Botswana president Ian Khama compared the Democratic victory in the United States to the 2024 elections in Botswana, saying voters in both countries had rejected leaders they were dissatisfied with.“Two years ago, there was a celebration in Botswana when a blue wave swept across the country, removing a failed leader rejected by voters. Today there is another celebration, this time in America, as another blue wave rejects a leader [Trump] who called on people to vote as if he were on the ballot,” Khama said on social media. He said Americans had rejected Trump despite his offer of US$5 000, adding that while democracy was being restored in Botswana, Americans still faced another two years under Trump's leadership.“The bad news is that this is only the midterm elections in that country, meaning there are still another two years of chaotic leadership under Trump," he said. The Democratic victory leaves Trump facing a more difficult final two years in office, with opposition lawmakers expected to exercise greater oversight of his administration and challenge some of his domestic and foreign policy priorities.
