Namibia’s men’s tennis team finished as the tournament winners of the Davis Cup’s Africa Group III event in Harare on Saturday – overtaking Senegal who lost against Nigeria.

Of the five contesting teams, Namibia, Senegal and Nigeria gain promotion to World Group II next year, while Algeria and Zimbabwe are relegated to Africa Group IV.

After a rest day on Friday, the Namibians stormed to a 3-0 win against hosts Zimbabwe.

Match 1 singles: Codie van Schalkwyk beat Ronan Mtisi 6-4, 6-2.

Match 2 singles: Connor van Schalkwyk beat Ethan Sibanda 6-2, 6-3.

Match 3 doubles: Steyn Dippenaar and Connor van Schalkwyk beat Ronan Mtisi and Ethan Sibanda 6-0, 6-0.

In their earlier matches, Namibia beat Algeria (2-1), narrowly lost 1-2 against Senegal, before 3-0 wins over Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

Earlier this year, Namibia hosted Hong Kong for a first-ever Davis Cup World Group II fixture in Windhoek, but lost 2-3.

The Namibia team captain Gerrie Dippenaar reported that after tiebreakers were analysed, organisers confirmed that Namibia was placed ahead of Senegal in overall first place.

“Zimbabwe were missing Benjamin Lock who had an operation. It just shows what a difference one player can make in the Davis Cup,” Dippenaar said.
