Medicine shortages irk PDM elders
News in short
The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) elder's council is concerned over the practicality of the health system in Namibia.
In a statement yesterday, the council said for the last three years, medicine has been difficult to obtain, especially in rural areas.
"Elders have major problems because they travel from areas outside of town to get treatment and when it is their time to be attended to, they are told to go to some private pharmacy to buy medicine. They need to pay for expensive medicine. Therefore, it does not work most of the time.”
The shortage of medicine is a result of mismanagement of funds and logistics, it added.
"On the matter of health passports, elders and other citizens are being referred to local shops countrywide to buy an exercise book to be used to substitute old clinic cards when they’re full.
“We therefore appeal to the government to allocate funds to the ministry of health to marshal back the old health system. They must also build big store rooms to have enough medicine stock," the statement read.
