Mayoral fund raises over N$600 000
The Ondangwa Town Council raised over N$600 000 at the launch of the mayoral development fund on Saturday.
The fund, which aims to assist vulnerable members of the community under the pillar “social progression” of the Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP), was launched by urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni.
The Rani group of companies, Emirates company of Joshua Haimbodi and John Namusheshe all pledged N$100 000.
Council spokesperson Petrina Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said the launch of the fund is to reaffirm the government’s commitment to taking care of those in need and to create a conducive environment for all to succeed.
Shitalangaho-Mutikisha said the priority areas will include sport and recreation, health and education, arts and culture, environment and disaster relief.
“Preference is given to causes that benefit a wide range of stakeholders, in particular the youth, women, elderly and physically challenged community members of Ondangwa,” she said.
Uutoni said the fund intends to improve the living conditions of needy Ondangwa residents by way of expressing compassion during unforeseen desperate situations as a responsible public entity.
Assistance will be provided to families, individuals and organisations in Ondangwa.
"The fund will greatly depend on financial contributions from community members and corporate entities within and beyond the municipal area of Ondangwa," he said.
Uutoni said the support of individuals who are committed to improving the lives of community members will be appreciated.
Mayor of Ondangwa Paavo Amwele said the council has a responsibility of creating a good environment for business people in order to do business which can be beneficial to those living in the town.
Amwele said he and his council are committed to ending poverty in Ondangwa and to make the town attractive for tourists and investors.
