Man sentenced to 19 years for rape
• Angolan national found guilty
Magistrate Makapa Simasiku labelled the act "a heinous crime" that continues unabated in the country.
The Ondangwa Magistrate's Court sentenced Angolan national Mbwale Pipawa (27) to 19 years in prison last Friday after he was found guilty for raping a three-year-old child.
Pipawa, who has been in custody since 2020, is said to have had unlawful sexual intercourse with the minor victim while the two of them were alone at home.
Magistrate Makapa Simasiku said the accused committed a heinous crime that continues unabated in the country, despite courts passing severe sentences against perpetrators.
“Society needs to be protected, and this will only be achieved if we send a strong message to the accused and would-be offenders that this offence will not be tolerated, and that those who commit these crimes should be prepared to kiss their freedom to liberty and movement goodbye. They will be taken out of society so that we answer to society's calls for protection,” he said.
He further noted that the suspect has been convicted of a prevalent offence, as women and children continue to be victims of rape.
“He is convicted a very serious offence. He violated an exceptionally young and vulnerable member of society. The victim was merely three years old at the time the accused forced himself on her to satisfy his lust,” the magistrate stressed.
Pipawa conducted his own defence, while the State was represented by prosecutor Charly Tangeni Nabot Iiyambo.
