The Landless People’s Movement (LPM) issued an official expulsion for Keetmanshoop regional constituency councillor Gerrit Witbooi on Friday.

In the statement, the party cited a sequence of events leading up to this decision, which included Witbooi’s recent actions against LPM and its leadership.

Last Sunday, the party confirmed that Witbooi, while in Aroab, burned the party flag and accused leader Bernardus Swartbooi of corruption.

“It is unfortunate that Gerrit Witbooi employed underhanded tactics in an attempt to paint himself as a victim or unsung hero, which is not a reflection of the reality on the ground,” the statement read.

Accusations

Witbooi refused to comment on his expulsion when contacted.

He previously accused Swartbooi of pushing a smear campaign against him because he [Witbooi] refused to smuggle in his aunt as the finance director in the //Karas regional council while someone else was recommended for the position.

“They suspended me illegally from council meetings to push this thing. Yesterday they were in Koës where they told 47 people I am in bed with Swapo and today in Aroab they did the same just for this post.

“I burnt the flag and those two pictures of Swartbooi. I was very angry they [didn’t] talk to me. The last time he spoke to me was on 18 January when he [Swartbooi] swore my mother.

“I am working for my people, that is why they stood up for me,” the councillor fumed at the time.
